From historical point of view, Yogyakarta used to be the center of several kingdoms, respectively the ancient Mataram Kingdom during the Islamic period and the Sultanate of Ngayogyokarto Hadiningrat.

The sultance of Yogyakarta is well respected by the surrounding people. King's family also has many royal servants called Abdi Dalem. In the modern era like today Abdi Dalem describe the high loyalty of the servants.
Beside their servants, King also has the special traditional guard on the Sultan's Palace with very attractive uniform and old weapon.

Dont forget to see the traditional transportation on Yogyakarta, Andong (horse cart). Andong is four wheel transportation drawn by one or two horses. The front wheels are smaller than rear ones. The driver is called kusir. usually kusir wear traditional costumes. Whenever you visit Yogyakarta, dont forget to ride andong which may be found at some major street and markets in Yogyakarta.

Another traditional transportation is Becak. Becak is a tricycle with a seat for two passangers at the front. The driver pedals the vechile at the back. Travelling by becak is not difficult because they can be found almost at every corner of the street in Yogyakarta
