Semarang Custom and Traditions

Most of the people in Semarang are Javanese. They are pleasant people; cheerful, unwilling to give offense or seemingly, to take offense.
Javanese language or called Bahasa Jawa is used as the every day language in this city.

Similiar with Sundanese, Javanese language has level of usage; language ranges from highly refined and formalized, to down-right vulgar and ribald. All are performed according to the society status.

Ruwatan is one of famous tradition at Semarang. Ruwatan is an exorcistic ritual, performed to release victim or potential victim from dangerous condition that leaves them open to attack from god Kal (Batara Kala).

The origin and meaning this tradition lie embedded in the wayang story, Murwakala, which is performed at this ritual.

Dug Der is the traditional music and festival with basic equipment called bedug (drum mosque) and the old cannon called meriem.
The name Dugder, came from the sound of fire crackers from old cannon. This ceremony since at 1881 as sign the beginning day of fasting month (bulan puasa)

Grebeg Mulud

Grebeg Mulud is the culmination of Sekaten ceremony. It is held on 12th days of Javanese month (Mulud). This festival start at early morning preceded by parade of the palace guard with them magnificent uniform.

In this ceremony, the local people will take a little bit of Gunungan.

Labuhan Ceremony

Labuhan ceremony is held to celebrate the birth of King or Sultan in Javanese language.
Labuh is means throwing something sacred in river or the sea. The offering from Sultan palace consist of food, cuts of fingernails and the hair of the Sultan.

Then the offering will be thrown away into the South sea. The offering is presented to the goddess of the South sea called Kanjeng Ratu Kidul.

Vaicak Ceremony Once a year during the full moon in May or June, the Buddhist hold the Vaicak ceremony commemorating the birth, the death and the time when the Boddhisatva attains the highest wisdom and become Buddha. The ceremonies held on Mendut Temple and attended by thousands of Buddhist coming from all over Indonesia.The following day. The Buddhist walk on procession from Mendut temple, passing the Pawon temple and finally on the Borobudur temple, where another ceremony is staged

Sekaten Ceremony

Sekaten Ceremony is annually held, starting on the fifth day of the Javanese month Mulud.
The ceremony takes the form of a sequence of celebrating the birth of Mohammed, the Prophet of Moslem.
The first day of ceremony start of midnight with a procession of the royal servant who are marching in two row bringing two set of Gamelan. The culmination of Sekaten ceremony is called Grebeg Mulud. It is held on the 12th day of Javanese month Mulud.
This festival start at early morning preceded by a parade of the Palace Guard with their magnificently uniform. In this ceremony the local people will try take a little bit of Gunungan. The Gunungan is made of food such as vegetables, peanuts, red pepper, eggs and several delicacies made of sticky rice.
It is mountain shaped and symbolizes the prosperity and wealth of the Mataram's land
